castle
The manor of Ashby was given by
William I to his follower Hugh de Grentmeisnil, and subsequently
passed by marriage to the Zouch family. The earliest remains include
parts of the hall (mid 12th century). These buildings were rebuilt
in the next two centuries. After the Wars of the Roses, Edward IV
granted Ashby to his Lord Chamberlain. William, Lord Hastings, who
added the tower of his name and chapel (1474 and 1483), prior to
the castle being "slighted" after the Civil War. |
