Elford church with 14th century work contains a fine series of restored effigies (including the poignant tomb of John Stanley who with his finger points at his temple indicating how he was killed by a tennis ball circa 1460) and remarkable collection of historically impressive heraldic shields.
Repton Church - click to zoom
Repton church contains major Saxon remains, as Repton was the former capital of South Mercia. A double monastery for both men and women was founded here in the late 7th century. The kings Aethelbald and Wiglaf were buried here in 757 and 840 respectively.
Breedon-on-the-Hill - click to zoom
Breedon-on-the-Hill church situated on the remains of a 180 foot high hill has commanding views. What remains is essentially the eastern priory end of an extensive building and contents include probably the finest collection of 8th/10th century Saxon carvings known in Britain.
